RCYC: Happy Close Knitters!

Rose City Yarn Crawl: Bumblebirch and Zigzag Ladies

The Bumblebirch is so lovely on the shelves. It will be even more lovely worked up into something you love!

Speaking of things we love, check out these gorgeous Close Knit gals in their Zigzag Gansey Cowls! Remember, this is a free pattern with the purchase of the Imperial Yarns Columbia, a gorgeous Oregon-grown yarn. Pop over to the Ravelry page to read a lovely bit about the inspiration for this cowl. Rose City Yarn Crawl: Passports and Prizes (and Snacks)

You all know about the prize baskets, right?  There is so much good stuff to win!

Just a sample of previous prize baskets, each basket is unique!

First, if you plan on making it to all of the shops on the crawl, you'll likely need a map and you'll definitely want a passport. As you plan your day, be sure to take a look at snack/meal/coffee/chill out opportunities in each neighborhood. The shops have all complied nice lists of our favorite places, and we love to support the other businesses in our communities.

As you make your way around Portland, be sure to get a stamp at each shop you visit. If you are able to fill the whole passport over the course of the weekend, you can turn it in at any shop to be eligible for the Grand Prize Basket!

Even if you don't make it to all of the shops, you are still eligible for the six prizes that each shop will be giving away. Just be sure to sign up at every shop to get your name in. There are more prize baskets, awesome kits, and gift certificates up for grabs!

Rose City Yarn Crawl: Trunk Shows and Visitors

The Rose City Yarn Crawl starts up on Thursday! We talked about the patterns that will be available in the shops, but there is a ton going on each day.

Every year for the yarn crawl, we are thrilled to invite visitors to our shop to show of their gorgeous goods. These trunk shows give you a chance to try on garments, check out how certain yarns will work up, and be inspired by all of the fabulous things these folks are doing. Here's our line up for next weekend:

The hand-dyer trunk shows are so much fun! In addition to seeing the yarn worked up into lovely items, you'll get to meet the folks behind some of our shop favorites and really appreciate how much work and love go in to creating these beautiful yarns.

Rose City Yarn Crawl: Patterns are Out

The Yarn Crawl starts a week from tomorrow! There is so much happening in our shop and all around Portland. First, let's talk about patterns...

The shop patterns have all been released. They theme this year was Waterways, and there are some really cute patterns for knit and crochet. From fish washcloths to bags to some gorgeous wraps and cowls, there is something for everyone. These patterns are available for free at each shop you visit during the crawl, and the yarn for each pattern is 10% off during the crawl.

I have been anxiously awaiting Sally's Zigzag Gansey cowl, which she knit up in Imperial Yarns Columbia. We have a lovely stock of this Oregon-grown yarn in the shop right now. It is squishy and local and softens up and fluffs up so nicely with a wash. It's good.

We also have a really cute crochet bag pattern by Melissa, the Sandy River worked up in Cascade Hampton. This sweet cotton and linen bag is just the thing for your adventures.

The patterns are all really lovely, and I appreciate how the different shops showcase yarns that are really special to them, from local Oregon options to favorite hand-dyed yarns. It's cool to see the shop personalities come through in their patterns.

Also, have you all been working on your Mystery Knit and Crochet-a-long patterns? All of the clues have been released, so it's time to get cracking. We can't wait to see all of your lovely creations next week!

Yarn Crawl KAL and CAL

The Rose City Yarn Crawl Mystery Knit-a-long and Crochet-a-long begin today! The create-a-long part is a fun way to stay motivated to get your project done by the yarn crawl weekend of March 1-4. The mystery part is fun, because you don't know what the finished product will look like until you're done! The first clue has been released today, and the remaining 3 will be released each Wednesday.

If you follow the links, you can purchase your pattern through Ravelry. You can also take a peek at previous years' mystery patterns, as well as all of the shop patterns from yarn crawls past. Each pattern will require two skeins of fingering weight yarn, totaling at least 700 yards. We have sooo many beautiful and inspiring options to choose from...solids, semi-solids, hand-dyed, speckled, variegated...the sock wall is your oyster.

We would love to see you at Open Knit and Crochet tonight from 6-9PM at the shop. We can get you all set up with your yarns, and we can all get started together. Come and mystery-a-long with us!

We are thrilled to have Krista in the shop for the last day of the Rose City Yarn Crawl. These cheerful packs are the perfect thing to infuse this grey spring day with some color! Unless you just want more grey and blue, in which case we have you covered, too.

Krista's free pattern for the Gradient Mitts is just the thing! You could also do a really great beanie or shawl or baby sweater or border on an adult sweater...so many ideas. We love to showcase these independent dyers and designers. Stop by and see all the pretties for yourself!

Yarn Crawling

I hope you had a chance to see Sarah and her beautiful Bumblebirch yarns in the shop today. Her colorful samples show off the amazing colors and really give you a chance to appreciate how nicely her hand-dyed yarns knit up.

We've had great crowds for the past two days! And it's always so much fun to have trunk shows and guests in the shop. Join us Saturday for Ami of Lakes Yarn & Fiber and Sunday for Krista of Pigeon Roof Studios. Have fun yarn crawling!

Close Knit Yarn Crawl Patterns

As part of the yarn crawl, we have two brand new shop patterns for you!

The sweet and romantic Silver Tip Fingerless Gloves are crocheted in Berroco Indigo, a beautiful cotton yarn made from recycled fibers. It will remind you of your favorite jeans.

The Coffee Beanie is a fun colorwork hat knit up in Woolstok from Blue Sky Fibers. This fun pattern works up so fast in this beautiful worsted weight yarn. 

These patterns will be available during the crawl for free with any purchase. After the yarn crawl, the patterns from all of the shops will be complied into an eBook available for sale on Ravelry. In addition, the yarns for each of these lovely designs will be 10% off during the crawl. We hope you love them as much as we do!

Rose City Yarn Crawl Starts Tomorrow!

Prepare to crawl, fiber enthusiasts! The RCYC has been a Portland institution for years now, and for good reason. Discover new yarns, meet dyers and designers, experience trunk shows from your favorite lines, and enter to win some epic prizes. Take a look at the prizes here. There is so much good stuff in these baskets!

Our little shop will be chock full of awesome yarn and people, even more so than usual. The full schedule is here, but I'll give you a little run down.

We will be showcasing trunk shows from Blue Sky Fibers and Shibui Knits during the entire event, beginning Thursday morning. If you have been excited to see these yarns knit up or try on a few of the garments from their recent pattern releases, then pop in for a chance to get your hands on these. Thursday and Friday are generally the quieter days when you'll have a better opportunity to see these in person.

On Thursday, we are thrilled to host Candice of Farmer's Daughter Fibers from Montana. Her yarns are so beautiful, my friends. They remind me a bit of Tosh in their subtlety and color range. You will love it, I promise. We are carrying her yarns full-time now, but she is going to bring all kinds of goodies from her dye studio that we might not see again. Thursday only!

On Friday, we will see Sarah of Bumblebirch Yarn. Her yarns have become a staple in the shop, and we love hosting her during the crawl. Her Dandelion colorway remains one of my most favorite. The colors are rich and the yarns are so soft!

We will also host designer Lisa Carney-Fenton on Friday. We will have a chance to meet her and check some of her recently-published designs.

Saturday brings Ami of Lakes Yarn and Fiber. I have a slight obsession with this gorgeous stuff, as I have recently admitted. I can't wait to see even more of her beautiful yarns!

We will wrap up on Sunday with Krista of Pigeon Roof Studios. She has recently relocated to Portland, and we feel so fortunate to have her this weekend. She will be showing off her beautiful yarns, including her gradient and ombre sets.

The whole things starts Thursday morning at 10. Join us this weekend for all the fun!

Eye Candy

It's another Yarn Crawl bag. But look at it! The Bucket Bags are available for pre-order now on the RCYC website. These are the gorgeous Queen Bee Rebecca Pearcy bags that we have had in the shop over the years, and they are stunning. Locally produced and very high quality, I promise. I've been using and abusing a similar bag for almost seven years, and it's still going strong.

Yarn Crawl is Coming

The Rose City Yarn Crawl is only a month away. Here's a sneaky peak at the annual bag, a notions bag this year!

Also, the insanely huge prizes baskets will involve these big beautiful tote buckets. Wow.

These are all coming from local designer and producer, Queen Bee. You can pre-order your notions bag by giving us a ring. Get ready to yarn crawl!

Final Day of RCYC

Today we are so excited to see our table COVERED in gorgeous yarn from Ami of Lakes Yarn and Fiber. She has been working hard to bring us all of this incredible yarn.

Yesterday we saw Brooke of Sincere Sheep and her beautiful colors, and she restocked our dwindling supply of her fabulous wares. Thank you Brooke!

The Rose City Yarn Crawl Begins!

The RCYC is in full swing starting today, Thursday March 3 at 10AM. Shops all over Portland will be participating with free patterns, door prizes, raffles, and all kinds of special events.
 
We are thrilled to host local designer Lisa Carney-Fenton who is showcasing many of her beautiful designs today. Stop in and say hello!

We are hoping to see Brooke Sinnes, founder and master dyer at Sincere Sheep, at any moment. She will be visiting from Napa with an inspiring spread of her naturally-dyed yarn.

And come back Friday to see Ami Volz of Lakes Yarn and Fiber. Holy cow, her stuff is stunning. Sally used her gorgeous Lochsa DK to design our shop knitting pattern, the Doug Fir Cowl, free with the purchase of the yarn during the crawl.

We will also get to meet Kate from Ruby Peak Farms in Lostine, Oregon. Her wool has never left Oregon! The ranch is located in eastern Oregon near Joseph, and the wool is processed in Salem before it makes its way to our little shop in Portland.

Come in Thursday. Come in Friday. Just come and say hi and join in the festivities!
